Ronit the Rav’s highly respected rabbi daughter chooses to leave because s Difficult to believe that this is a debut novel it is so well paced and the characters truly came to life for me. And there are all the many interactions among the members of the community about the nature of their connection to the one living child of their beloved Rav and about the future of their synagogue. It is ultimately a tale of love lost and a paean to the contentment that self-sacrifice can bring.
As a secular person, I tend to think of orthodox communities as marching in lock step when presented with a novel like this it makes me realize the are individuals with hopes and fear just like the rest of us. Alderman writes this story with enormous compassion and understanding.
Now Esti is married to Dovid, and Ronit is shocked by how different they both seem, and how much greater the gulf between them is. Are you being paid for it?
