At the most abstract level, the rabble are those produced by civil society who do not gabble their subsistence through labour, who have lost the dignity of being a recognized member of society, and who feel that they have been wronged. That said, this is a classical account nevertheless, one that remains true to Hegel’s masterful and consummating deployment of onto- theological categories.
